What Are Domed CCTV Cameras?
As we’ve mentioned in previous blog entries, HD CCTV cameras come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. One option, in particular, is very popular for office buildings and other business premises: CCTV cameras with external domes. These cameras are more compact than their traditional counterparts and have radically different shapes. You may be wondering if they are right for your business. They have several unique features which can be advantageous in some situations and disadvantageous in others. We’ll look at these features in detail in order to help you make an informed decision.
What are the benefits of Dome Cameras?
High Level of Discretion
Due to their small size and unobtrusive design, HD CCTV cameras with external domes are far less noticeable than conventionally shaped cameras. Customers and clients can sometimes find highly visible CCTV cameras a little unnerving, so small cameras with external domes are ideal for public-facing business premises and sites. However, discrete cameras are less effective at deterring criminals, simply because they may go unnoticed. As a result, they are not suitable for use outside your premises as deterrents or in warehouses and other places where you keep large quantities of stock.
Greater Protection
External domes are very useful for protecting the CCTV cameras within. If you need a small camera that is highly resilient and hard to break, CCTV cameras with protective domes are a great option. They may be useful if your cameras have previously been targeted by vandals, for example. However, a protective dome can also slightly obstruct a camera’s view, so if clarity of image is vitally important to your business, you may wish to consider a non-domed option instead.
Light Weight
Because of their small size, these cameras tend to be lighter than more traditionally-shaped CCTV cameras. This can give you a greater degree of flexibility over their placement because you don’t have to worry as much about supporting their weight. However, their lightness may also make them more susceptible to strong winds and other external hazards. As we mentioned in Point 1, they are not ideal for use outside.
What Should You Consider When Buying Dome Cameras
- What level of visibility do we need? (360-degree coverage, Low light, Resolution)
- How many cameras do I need? (Internal/External, Hidden Areas)
- Are there any environmental factors at play (Weatherproof)
