How do wireless CCTV camera systems work?
CCTV technology has advanced rapidly over the last decade. Not long ago, CCTV cameras relied on wires to transmit their footage back to monitors and data storage devices. Nowadays, however, HD CCTV systems utilise wireless connections that allow data to be transmitted much more freely. Cameras no longer need to be physically connected to their monitors and storage devices via wires. If your CCTV system still uses wires to carry data, you should consider upgrading to a wireless system as soon as possible.
There are three core reasons for this, which we will explore in this blog post.
Minimising the risk of disruption
Wires can be damaged or broken as a result of accidents and mishaps. They can also become frayed or wear away over time. When a wire or cable is too badly damaged, it can no longer be used to transmit data. CCTV systems that rely on physical connections are therefore vulnerable to disruption whenever their wires become damaged. This isn’t a problem for wireless CCTV systems. Wireless data transmission doesn’t require a physical conduit and is much harder to disrupt as a result. Broken wires can lead to loss of CCTV coverage, so it’s best to get rid of wires wherever possible.
Increasing the range of data transmission
CCTV cameras that use wires can only send their footage to nearby monitors and data storage devices that they are directly connected to. Wireless CCTV cameras can transmit data to storage devices and monitoring devices that are kept in different buildings or completely different locations. If you need to access footage remotely or store your CCTV footage off-site for security reasons, investing in a wireless CCTV system will make the process much easier.
Limiting your security overheads
CCTV wires need to be maintained and occasionally replaced, just like any other part of your security system. Naturally, this costs money. By upgrading to a wireless HD CCTV system, you can save a significant amount of money on your overheads. You don’t need to pay to maintain or replace wires that aren’t there, after all.
